JUKE
JOINT BOOGIE: NOW AVAILABLE
Released September 2010
At Sun Studios in the early 1950s, Sam Phillips was producing
some of the most primal blues music ever heard. This would
go on to form the basis for what we now know as Rock an Roll.
Artists like Howlin' Wolf and Doctor Ross recorded music that
was to influence Elvis Presley, who then went on to inspire
the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.
When I think back to what led me to my love of music from
this era, it becomes clear that hearing things like the harmonica
in The Rolling Stones "Midnight Rambler", was like
a trumpet call to follow the music back to its roots.
The music of these artists had a raw, primal rough and tumble,
a filth and sleeze that, despite being recorded in the conservative
1950s, sounded more mean than most recordings made then or
since.
The love of this music is the inspiration behind 'Juke Joint
Boogie'.
Boogie all night long!

DEVIL
IN THE WOODPILE: Collard Greens & Gravy
CD Released 2007
Devil In The Woodpile reeks of pure unadulterated
dirt, with a dynamic intensity that has the band roll from
the manic stomping howl of Can't Take It, to the almost
tribal dervish of So Much Trouble, from the fiddle-driven
near train wreck of What's More, to the dark ruminations
of So Sad This Morning.
Collard Greens and Gravy's sound is full of
the feeling of late night drinking sessions, of backyard parties,
dark days and eerie, haunted nights, BBQs with family and
friends' kids running between the amps, all of the sadness
and joy of humanity. These are not johnny-come-lately boys
with a head full of ambition, this is the music of grown men
with something real to say.
In much the same way as the older generation
of Mississippi musicians were discovered via Fat Possum records
in the States, one gets the sense that CG&G will be remembered
long after they are gone, with younger musicians obsessing
over their sound and being inspired to go on and form their
own bands and spread the word. They are not there merely to
be looked at, but are happiest surrounded by a throng of dancing
bodies in a rock 'n' rolll trance, the band and audience alike
moving as one.

BIRD: Collard Greens & Gravy
CD Released 2004
"Collard Greens and Gravy have tapped into
some deep subterranean stream that connects us all to the
source of the blues."
Mark Doherty,
Rhythms Magazine
"This is blues with serious intent."
Lee Howard,
Sunday Herald Sun
"reminded me of the eeriness of an early Skip James recording
and like the early Delta bluesmen, the lack of a rigid backbeat/rhythm
section allowed the feeling to float rather than be 'laid
down".
John Durr,
Black Market Music

COLLARD
GREENS & GRAVY
CD Released 1999
"Ian's soulful vocals, authentic phrasing
and effective harp playing are the first thing that impress
about this act. But on closer listening we disciver the tight
(rhythmically and sonically) playing of James. His style is
a lesson in economy of playing and his use of vibrato, which
could be a distracton in the hands of a lesser guitarist,
brings us memories of those old Excello recordingsof the 1950's.
Anthony ofers a wonderful free time to the groove, and his
use of the 'djembe' brings a marvellously different perspective
to the groove. Rather than anchor the band, his percussion-like
playing, rather than strict drumming allows for some excellent
interplay......."
John Durr, Black Market Music
Since its release in 1999, this self-titled
debut CD has won Album of the Year, Band of the Year and Male
Performer of the Year at the Vic /Tas Awards and Best Song
and Best Band Awards at the Goulburn Festival Australian Blues
Awards
