Every year, Brisbane-based 7-piece
Doch invite 20 special guests up to Brisbane Powerhouse
to form the Doch Gypsy Orchestra, with the express
aim of ripping through a musical repertoire based
on the Rom traditions of Eastern Europe while
hundreds of enraptured Brisbanites dance themselves
into a frenzy.
A 12-track collection recorded over 2 nights
during the 2006 season, Bride in a Red Dress is,
in short, Doch's best album yet. This is a recording
capable of bringing you to your feet - a relentlessly
thrilling, uncompromisingly musical, undeniably
exciting and high-spirited audio distillation
of a project unique to the Australian world music
scene.
Where previous release, This Drink, This Moon,
beautifully captured the energy and excitement
of the fledgling group, Bride in a Red Dress manages
to assert Doch's musical maturity without sacrificing
the sense of adventure that is the epitome of
the Doch Gypsy Orchestra experience. It covers
an astounding amount of musical ground, displays
an astonishing array of talent, including special
guests Zulya Kamalova, Goran Maric and Daniel
Weltlinger alongside the regular Doch line-up,
and showcases the obvious joy of the ensemble
itself and of the fans that annually make the
Doch Gypsy Orchestra a sell-out.
While every track pulses with an almost transcendental
musical glow, highlights of Bride in a Red Dress
include: the breathless delivery of empirical
opening epic A La Turk, the awkward broken glass
string and cimbalom-driven madness of title track,
Bride in a Red Dress; guitarist Gerard Mapstone's
beautifully elegant introduction to the Romany
national anthem, Djelem Djelem; the sparse, powerful
percussive conversation preceding guitar powerhouse
Fidoe; and the catch-your-breath trick-stop Rind
de Hore, where a furious banjo solo from band
leader Nick Lavers unleashes the full towering
force of an all-in musical assault.
The more delicately orchestrated tunes are equally
powerful, with Ausencia's weeping string section
the perfect foil to the heartbreakingly husky
tones of Zulya, and the insistence of cimbalom
and violin unravelling into a high-riding musical
celebration on Stork.
While the sounds of a clearly over-excited crowd
make it clear that this is a well-loved band,
it's the whoops of encouragement from the players
themselves that give Bride in a Red Dress such
a celebratory feel. The dénouement of perennial
favourite Kibori (delivered with an audible bravado
and impeccable style by Doch's formidable front
man, vocalist and trumpet player Michael Rogers)
in which the band down tools and sing along, exemplifies
what's so special about the Doch Gypsy Orchestra
- it's a true ensemble.
