AUSTRALIAN
FIDDLE TUNES: Growling Dogs
CD Released 2002
Growling Dogs first growled
at the Brunswick Music Festival in 1998. The brainchild
of Alan Musgrove, they were to be a loose
re-incarnation of the band of the legendary fiddler
Joe Cashmere, active in the Hillston district
of NSW between 1893 and 1935. The original band
had three fiddles and a piano and so do the Growling
Dogs.
We are Julia Arnold, Helen Cahun,
Lisa Christensen and Greg O'Leary.
Julia, our Goanna-jockey, was sadly unable to
record for personal reasons, so on this CD, Tony
Hargreaves (an Original GD) helped us out
and batters away like a true blue canine. We play
collected versions of the music of mainly South-east
Australia and Tasmania as well as tunes passed
on aurally by stil living Traditional Australian
fiddlers, and some orgiginal compositions based
on Australian, Irish and Scottish traditions.
We play in a style that is Australian in feel.
All-important in traditional music, we believe
our feel is representative of the countless unknown
and almost forgotten fiddlers of the Australian
rural culture.
Helen Cahun: fiddle
Lisa Christenen: fiddle
Greg O'Leary: fiddle
Tony Hargreaves: piano
