THEY USED TO SING: Alan Musgrove
A Collection of Australian
Folksongs
CD Released 2003
Songs They Used to Sing comes complete
with a superb set of notes. Here is one example:
Lazy Harry's
From Banjo Paterson's personal papers in the Mitchell
Library, Sydney. The hand-written music for this
song was among the contributions for Paterson's
Old Bush Songs (1905), thus making it the
oldest collected version. The text published in
Old Bush Songs was edited by Paterson but
here I have used the contributor's words. The
published version of the song was titled On
The Road to Gundagi although the original
music was headed And We Camped at Lazy Harry's.
The chorus is somewhat different to the one that
is commonly known, as there is no reference to
the town of Boonabri. The tune is also different
from either the well-known one, or the one collected
by Ron Edwards from Jack Parveez. John Meredith
collected, from Wally Wilesmith of Tumbarumba,
a song called Jacksons which can be seen
to be a rough parody of Lazy Harry's. Meredith
sugested that the tune for Jacksons could
have been the original air for Lazy Harry's,
and after seeing the Paterson version, I must
agree there are definite similarities.
