JIIR:
Pigram Brothers
CD Released 2001
The original saltwater sound, the
Pigram Brothers music defines their hometown
the mythical birthplace of poets and pearlers,
Broome, Western Australia.
This band of brothers was voted
Best Indigenous Artists 2005 at the West Australia
Music Industry Awards. The band produces exceptional
original music, delivering an infectious mix of
earthy harmonies and acoustic stringed instruments,
bringing to life songs about their saltwater lifestyle
and homeland.
The songs from the first two Pigram
Brothers albums, Saltwater Country (produced
by Shane Howard of Goanna) and Jiir (produced
by NY based Kerryn Tolhurst of Dingoes fame) have
become anthems for the awesome Kimberley region
of far north western Australia, embedding themselves
into this ancient landscape.
"My land by the water, my land
by the waterside / Jiir, milgin-nguur'/ Feeding
on the rising tide / High above the mangrove down
Burrgoogoon / Hunting for my family / You know
the tide right / Just look at the moon / yellow
wattle flower smell 'em, tell 'em that the mullet
must be fat today / Sliding in, glide on the wind
of the late afternoon." (My Land by The Pigrams
and P.Mamid.)
A Jiir is a small sea eagle and
My Land is a song from the point of view of an
Osprey on the wing. This song of place is the
title track from that c.d.
