TEN
CENT SHOOTERS: Ten Cent Shooters
CD Released 1995
The Ten Cent Shooters started out
as a five piece in the late seventies and disbanded
some years later. Two of the founding members
Peter Woodward and Scott Wise reformed
the band in late 1992 by teaming up with double
bass player Sean Diggins. This lineup proved
highly successful and has finally given rise to
this debut recording.
To paraphrase the immortal Mississippi
Fred McDowell, this band 'do not play rock and
roll'. They perform Country Blues tunes made famous
by various African American blues performers of
the 20's and 30's. The Shooters are heavily influenced
by these early artists, and consequently rarely
perform in cities. Western Australia's south-west
rural communities know the band well and have
learnt the barrelhouse dancin' this high energy
music inspires. Their approach to performing this
material is to try for the character of the sound
made by original blues artists without the impossible
aim of mimicking them.
The result is a good time feel driven
by yeaers of listening to and playing early blues
tunes.
This is the first recording from
the Ten Cent Shooters.
Peter Woodward: guitar, foot
Scott Wise: vocals, harmonica, mandolin.
