Colum Sands has performed in over thirty countries around
the world, confirming the universal appeal for the songs and
stories with which he observes the minute and often-humorous
details of life. He first toured Australia in 2006, and returns
for the third time in 2009. His previous Australian tours
were characterised by sell-out shows, standing ovations, rave
reviews, and 2009 will be no different.
A member of the internationally renowned Sands Family from
County Down, Ireland, Colum established his reputation as
a songwriter with the release of his first solo album in 1981.
Since this time he has released a further six albums to wide
acclaim, including his latest release, Live in Concert
Songs and Stories.
Colum Sands songs have been covered by a plethora of well-known
artists over the years including Billy Connolly, Maddy Prior
& June Tabor, Andy Irvine, Tommy Makem & Liam Clancy,
Roy Bailey, Mick Hanley and Enda Kenny.
A long time radio presenter for BBC Radio 2 and Radio Ulster,
Sands was recently presented with the Living Tradition Award
for services to Folk and Traditional Music. He is also known
for his work with Israeli storyteller Sharon Aviv, his writing
and his talents as a studio producer.
Colum Sands has appeared in venues ranging from intimate
gatherings like the Stray Leaf Folk club in Mullaghban to
the stages of the Alte Oper in Frankfurt and Carnegie Hall,
New York. Needless to say, he has picked up countless stories
and songs on his travels and weaves these into his performances
in an effortless style.

It could be said that three of Ireland's most time honored
citizens, the musician, the poet and the storyteller, all
travel together as one, each time singer songwriter Colum
Sands sets out on one of his many journeys around the world.
A member of the famous Sands Family from County Down, Colum
grew up in a house and home where music, story and song was
a way of life and it remains so to this day.
His performances, and indeed his songs, are laced with fascinating
and often very funny stories of people he meets, the kind
of people we all know but hadn't really noticed before. Colum's
unique style of performance has brought him to thirty countries
and into all kinds of musical company on stage and in studio
over the years, from Joan Baez and Pete Seeger to the Chieftains
and Billy Connolly.

What they say:
An unforgettable, wonderful performer. I've just
seen him play to 2500 people in the Australian National
Folk Festival's biggest venue and make everyone feel as
if they were sitting in his lounge room. He's warm, witty,
moving and funny
- Steve Barnes Director Fairbridge Folk Festival
...a marvellous tongue in cheek sense of humour, Colum
Sands is a very talented songwriter with an ear for
tuneful melodies and an ability with words which enables
him to come up with some wonderful lyrics...
- Ivan Martin, Sunday World
...a wonderful evening of entertainment. A natural
witty storyteller, Colum charmed the audience with his
lively and evocative melodies, colloquial lyrics and
gentle humorous tales of everyday life in the past and
present. Not only that, but the man has a wonderful
voice and is a mean guitar picker...
- Jim Brough, Folk on Tap
Before he left for New Zealand, he charmed the audience
at The Merry Muse Folk Club in Canberra and The Mordialloc
Festival in Victoria and is about to hit a venue near
you. The (director of the National Folk Festival) Dave
ONeill was raving about Colums not to be
equalled act, after seeing him perform at The Muse.
